    Evaluation of Dental Surface after De-Bonding Orthodontic Bracket Bonded with a Novel Fluorescent Composite: In Vitro Comparative Study

    The use of a new fluorescent composite can reduce some of the problems related to procedures of de-bonding orthodontic bracket (enamel damage, dentine lesions, and composite residuals). The aim of the presented study was to compare the effect of fluorescent and conventional non-fluorescent composite on dental surface and composite remnants by in vitro de-bonding tests. De-bonding of florescent composite (DFC) and the de-bonding of standard composite (DSC) were performed by operators on an in vitro sample of 48 teeth under UV light (360–370 nm min 20 mW/cm2). Modified ARI (Adhesive Remnant Index), scored under 5.0×/235 magnification, was used for evaluation of dental surface after the procedure, and the duration required for de-bonding was measured. Significant differences in ARI between the two groups were observed (Pearson two-tailed p = 0.006 1.4 ± 0.1 95% C.I.), and the average duration of de-bonding was 38 s (DFC) and 77 s (DSC) per tooth, respectively (Mann–Whitney test p = 0.015; 57.7 ± 19.9 95% C.I.). The use of fluorescent composite could significantly improve the quality of de-bonding by reducing the quantity of composite residuals and visible enamel damage, while reducing time needed for successful procedure performance

    Drug Loaded Gingival Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (GinPa-MSCs) Inhibit In Vitro Proliferation of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

    Human mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been widely investigated both for regenerative medicine and their antinflammatory/immunomodulatory capacity. However, their ability to home pathological tissues suggested the development of strategies for using MSCs as carrier to deliver drug into tumor microenvironment. MSCs obtained from different tissues can be loaded in vitro with anti-cancer drugs by a simple procedures. In this report, we studied MSCs isolated and expanded from gingival papilla (GinPa-MSCs), by testing their ability to uptake and release three important anti-neoplastic drugs: Paclitaxel (PTX), Doxorubicin (DXR) and Gemcitabine (GCB). The efficacy of drugs releasing GinPa-MSCs was studied on a pancreatic cancer cell line and confirmed in vitro against a line of tongue squamous cell carcinoma (SCC154). Our results demonstrated that GinPa-MSCs efficiently incorporate the drugs and then released them in active form and in sufficient amount to produce a dramatic inhibition of squamous cell carcinoma growth in vitro. If compared with other MSCs sources, the collection of GinPa-MSCs is poorly invasive and cells can be easily expanded and efficiently loaded with anti cancer drugs. In particular, gemcitabine loaded GinPa-MSCs provide a good "cell-mediated drug delivery system" for a future potential application in the context of the oral oncology

    Orthodontic movement of a dilacerated maxillary incisor in mixed dentition treatment

    Dilaceration is a dental deformity characterized by an angulation between crown and root causing non-eruption of the tooth. It generally occurs following trauma to the deciduous dentition the apices of which lie close to the permanent tooth buds. Surgical extraction used to be the first choice in treating the severely dilacerated teeth. In this case report, it is described how a dilacerated central incisor was successfully moved into alignment in a young patient with proper surgical and orthodontic management avoiding use of prosthetic/implant devices. The panoramic radiograph after the traumatic injury is compared with the one at the end of treatment. The results were sustainable over long-term in both periodontal and aesthetic terms

    In recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of elderly patients requesting orthodontist consultations. Masticatory performance is an important factor influencing the quality of life in independent healthy elderly subjects and only the restoration of skeletal and dental relationships in the three planes of space can assure oral health and functions with the consequential nutritional balance of the whole organism. The rehabilitation treatment in elderly subjects must comprehend orthodontic and prosthetic needs. This kind of treatment has two main goals: firstly, the restoration of oral function and secondly the restoration of facial morphology.Objective: In recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of elderly patients requesting orthodontist consultations.Masticatory performance is an important factor influencing the quality of life in independent healthy elderly subjects and only the restoration of skeletal and dental relationships in the three planes of space can assure oral health and functions with the consequential nutritional balance of the whole organism.The rehabilitation treatment in elderly subjects must comprehend orthodontic and prosthetic needs.     Orthodontic treatment in a patient with cleidocranial dysostosis

    Cleidocranial dysostosis is a rare congenital skeletal disorder, associated with clavicular hypoplasia or aplasia, delayed closure of cranial fontanels, brachycephalic skull, delayed exfoliation of primary dentition, eruption of permanent teeth, and multiple supernumerary and morphologic abnormalities of the maxilla and mandible. The disorder is caused by mutation in the CBFA1 gene, on the short arm of chromosome 6p21. The prevalence of cleidocranial dysostosis is estimated one per million, without sex or ethnic group predilection. The purpose of this paper is to describe the orthodontic treatment in a patient with cleidocranial dysostosis. Therapy may include removal of supernumerary teeth, surgical exposure of impacted teeth, and orthodontic treatment

    Straight-wire appliances: standard versus individual prescription

    In this article the individual patient (IP) appliance is described. It consists of 250 options of bracket and band variations as the straight wire appliances. Increasing the bracket capabilities means using an increasing number of brackets, each with a specific design created for a treatment situation. The objective of IP appliance is to eliminate wire bending from orthodontic treatment and improve the treatment results. To manage this technique, a computer software is needed. Internet offers significant possibilities in managing each patient by patient basis. The clinician is required to make the diagnosis and treatment plan before ordering the appliance.
